The project “Walale, potable water and health for Angola” has its origin in the frustration that we feel after checking, every time that we have visited Angola as cooperants, that one area like the surroundings of the Hospital de Vouga in the province of Bié, who counts with many springs and hydric resources, lacks of an adecuate infrastructure and concoiusness about hygene basics which would allow a responsable and good use of potable water.

This circumstance implies a high risk for gastrointestinal diseases, sometimes so severe that may cause death, all associated to the lack of potable water.

Basically, we have thought of installing a water potabilizing plant which will work thnks to the solar energy from the Hospital´s surroundings. It is a must to have available good information and to establish guidelines to approach a good use of water, not only for cleaning food but also for personal hygene, with the objective of reducing the incidence of diseases caused by consuming non healthy water.

This Project would benefit, apart from the patients at the Hospital, this area´s population (approximately 2000 inihabitants), distributed in diferente rural villages in a radius of 2km.

These are the main activities that we will focus on:

  • Installation of a first water solar potabilizing plant located well that right now is the source of water for the hospital.
  • Creating commitees with renowned sanitary facultatives, responsible figures of every community and/or benefitted village.
  • Classes for receiving formation on how the potabilizing plant can operate and on maintenance, and classes for obtaining information and for sensibilizing about the good use of water so as to involve as much population as posible in the project.

Therefore, what we are trying to achieve that the easiness of the access to potable water contributes to gaining a more dignified and safe life.

Budget

The technical project consists in the instalation and the starting up of a station of potable water treatment (SPWT). Taking into account the equipment suministration, the materials needed and the auxiliary elements, the total costs reach approximately 40.000 Euros.

To achieve the necessary funding and in order to promote donations that would allow us to develop this project, we are holding campaigns and concoiusness activities such as informative talks, photographic expositions and sales involving different people and institutions.

We consider this is a project that´s worth it, which will save lives and will improve the quality of life of many people in this environment.
